The Issue

In the City of Sault Ste. Marie, there's a concerning absence that needs addressing – the lack of a portrait of King Charles in the City Council Chambers. As a resident who deeply respects our Constitutional Monarchy, I find it disrespectful and disheartening that our city fails to recognize our monarch in such a symbolic location. Canada is, after all, a Constitutional Monarchy where executive authority is vested formally in the King through the Constitution.

The role of the monarchy in Canada is not ceremonial; every act of government is carried out in the name of the Crown, but importantly, the authority for those acts flows from the Canadian people. Since Confederation, Canada's monarchy was firmly established, with the executive government and authority vested in the monarchy as per section 9 of the Constitution Act, 1867. This long-standing relationship between the Crown and Canada is foundational, and it deserves visible acknowledgment in our civic spaces.

By placing a portrait of King Charles in the City Council Chambers, Sault Ste. Marie can demonstrate respect for our constitutional foundation and enhance civic pride among residents. Such an act honors our traditions and educates visitors and officials about the governance system we uphold. It's not just about the image of a King; it's about recognizing a significant element of our nation's identity and history.

Join me in urging the city council to place King Charles' portrait prominently in the Chambers. Your voice matters in ensuring our monarchy's influence and importance do not go unnoticed in our local governance. Please sign this petition to emphasize honoring our constitutional ties and to stand by tradition and national identity.
