Put crossing arms on Joseph Emison Road railroad
The Issue
My baby brother was killed on these tracks in Emison/Oaktown, Indiana, and two of his friends—who mean the world to me—almost lost their lives as well. These tragic accidents should have never happened. The trains often pass through without even blowing their horns, they speed mercilessly through town, and the protective measures are inadequate. Yes, they replaced the lights, but this only happened because both incidents occurred less than a year apart. It's terrifying and heartbreaking.
The bells that are supposed to alert us of oncoming trains are not very loud, and more importantly, this is the only public crossing along Old 41 that lacks safety crossing arms. These crossing arms are crucial in providing an extra layer of safety to prevent future tragedies. We cannot overlook the essential need for these on Joseph Emison Road. Lives depend on it.
The recent accidents should have been a wake-up call. Statistically, crossings equipped with gates have seen reductions in collisions by up to 90%, according to the Federal Railroad Administration. Why then is Emison/Oaktown an exception? Why are we left vulnerable?
The time for change has come. We demand that crossing arms be installed at the Joseph Emison Road railroad crossing immediately to protect our loved ones and our community. We cannot afford to wait for another tragedy to unfold before taking action.
Please, for the sake of my brother, his friends, and every single person in our community, I urge you to sign this petition. Let's compel the local authorities and railway companies to prioritize human lives over logistical convenience. Help make Joseph Emison Road a safer place for everyone.
