Get countries working together on a global solution for defeating dengue

The Issue

There are 390 million cases of dengue in over 100 countries each year. The World Health Organization estimates that 40% of the world’s population is now at risk from dengue. This is why we need to make sure that the control of one of the fastest growing neglected tropical diseases remains a priority for all nations.

This mosquito-borne virus, transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, normally causes a flu-like illness but can develop into severe dengue, causing a lot of pain and even death, if not treated properly. It is most often found in poor urban suburbs where it has a devastating impact – costing people between 14 and 19 days away from work, along with three times a family’s monthly income in medical expenses. It is also a growing burden on public health budgets and hampers efforts by aid agencies to raise living standards in the world’s poorest communities.

We are calling for collaboration to stop this disease. We believe that all countries across the globe should increase their focus on dengue and work together to improve disease surveillance, establish the true burden of dengue, support drug research, and sustain focus on the vital work that community workers and volunteers provide.
