The Issue

The Slimming World "Free2Go" scheme is a breeding ground for eating disorders in young people aged 11 to 15. This program, although seemingly designed to promote health, actually sows seeds for lifelong restrictive and avoidance eating behaviours. It's deeply concerning that this initiative targets children, particularly those in a critical developmental phase preceding puberty.

As a society, we cannot stand by while young people are indoctrinated with ideas of "synergy" and the classification of foods into "healthy A's" and "B's". These concepts are not suitable for impressionable minds that are still growing, learning, and developing. Initiatives like "Free2Go" are not just programs; they represent a dangerous shift towards normalizing diet culture amongst children. Encouraging kids to engage with such complex dietary systems lays the groundwork for unhealthy relationships with food that persist into adulthood.

Furthermore, the scheme’s focus not only risks malnutrition at a time when young bodies require balanced and ample nutrition, but it also insinuates that these children need to adopt dieting practices to conform to societal beauty standards. This is damaging and harmful, especially during a period crucial for mental and physical development.

Statistics from reputable health organizations reflect a worrying trend: adolescent eating disorders are on the rise, with a significant percentage of cases beginning before the age of 15. It's imperative that we change this trajectory and protect our youth from harmful influences that prioritize weight over well-being.

I urge Slimming World to reconsider the impact of the Free2Go scheme and to immediately cease its promotion to young people. Instead, resources should be redirected to programs that encourage holistic health without the emphasis on weight loss or food categorization. These programs should focus on healthy growth, balanced nutrition, and the mental well-being of our youth.

Join me in calling for Slimming World to end the "Free2Go" scheme and to support healthier, more sustainable models for promoting youth well-being. Please sign this petition to protect our children from the harmful consequences of early engagement in diet regimes.
