Put an End to Kuwait's Persecution of Mohamad Al-Mail

Put an End to Kuwait's Persecution of Mohamad Al-Mail
The Issue
We, the undersigned, are writing to express our deep concern regarding the recent revocation of the Kuwaiti citizenship of Mohamad Al-Mail. This decision, issued by the Kuwaiti government on October 19, 2025 (Amiri Decree No. 201/2025), is the latest in a series of politically motivated actions aimed at silencing him and depriving him of his fundamental rights.
Background:
Mohamad Al-Mail was awarded a government scholarship to study political science in the United Kingdom in 2015. However, his scholarship was later revoked due to his critical views on politics and religion. Facing increasing pressure, he applied for asylum in the United Kingdom in 2017, where his application was accepted.
Despite receiving asylum, Al-Mail faced numerous politically motivated prosecutions in Kuwait. Over the years, he was sentenced to a total of 53 years in prison in absentia for charges that were based solely on his political views, such as undermining state authority, questioning the judiciary, and spreading "false news"—charges that lacked any credible legal basis or fair trial.
In 2023, in a rare act of clemency, Kuwaiti authorities granted Al-Mail partial amnesty (Amiri Decree No. 8/2023), signaling an apparent end to the persecution. However, just two years later, Al-Mail's citizenship was revoked, despite the amnesty and the legal assurances made to him.
Our Demands:
- Reversal of Citizenship Revocation: We call on the Kuwaiti government to immediately reverse the revocation of Mohamad Al-Mail's citizenship and reinstate his legal status.
- International Pressure for Protection: We urge the United Kingdom to use its diplomatic channels to address this violation of human rights and ensure the safety and protection of Mr. Al-Mail, who remains in the UK as a legal political asylee.
