The Issue

Living in Corvallis, Oregon, I've become all too familiar with the dangers that present themselves at the Harrison and 23rd intersection. Every day, I walk across this crosswalk along with many other Oregon State students on their way to class. Often times feeling wary about the fast-paced traffic that a lot of the time shows little regard for pedestrians. This particular intersection is known for its accidents, and in a college town where it is typical for walking to be a main mode of transportation, it's surprising that this location doesn't have a crosswalk light.

Providing one would provide peace of mind and both pedestrians and drivers would feel safer with regulated traffic flow.

In communities across the country, similar interventions have proven to dramatically reduce accidents and enhance safety. According to studies by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, marked crosswalks equipped with lights can decrease pedestrian-related accidents by up to 46%.

I am reaching out to the City of Corvallis and their Traffic Safety Commission to take prompt action on this matter. Our community deserves a safe environment where crossing the street isn’t a daily gamble with one’s personal safety.

Please join me in urging the city to prioritize this essential safety upgrade. By signing this petition, you’re helping make our streets safer for everyone. Let’s tell our leaders that every resident’s well-being must be protected and that we demand proactive measures now to prevent future tragedies. Sign and help us illuminate this path to safety.
