The Issue

This school year at East Bridgewater junior senior high school, our community has suffered the loss of two incredible individuals who were part of our student body. Despite their impact and presence in our lives, their memories have not been honored by the school. I find this deeply troubling because not so long ago, when a straight white student who left us in eighth grade passed away during her sophomore year, the school chose to honor her in a meaningful way. (With obvious respect towards her)It's time for us to address this disparity and push for equal recognition for all students who have passed away.

Every student, regardless of their background, deserves to be remembered and celebrated for the unique contributions and joy they brought to our community. Each life lost is a significant part of our school's fabric, and failing to acknowledge them erases their legacy and the lives they touched. This isn't just about remembrance; it’s about fostering a culture of inclusivity and equality.

I propose that our school establishes a policy to equally commemorate all students who have passed away. This policy should include options such as a yearly memorial service, a dedicated plaque, or tree planting in their honor. By institutionalizing remembrance practices, we ensure every student’s life is valued equally after they are gone.

We can start by petitioning the school board and administration to adopt this policy. Show them how much these students meant to us through letters, emails, and meetings. Share stories and memories to illustrate their impact and drive the point home that they truly deserve to be honored.

Let us not wait any longer to give our departed schoolmates the recognition they deserve. Join me in signing this petition as a step towards creating a more respectful and inclusive environment. Together, we can ensure that every student's legacy lives on and that no one is left behind, forgotten. Please sign this petition today and help us bring about this change.
