Push Northampton's City Hall to reserve all Main St parking spots for those who need them

Push Northampton's City Hall to reserve all Main St parking spots for those who need them
The Issue
The upcoming Picture Main Street project is at its 75% design phase, which means that the landmarks for the project are already decided upon. Despite the outcry of some, we cannot say 'no' to Picture Main Street at this point. However, we can still press the City to make good decisions about how we will use the Main Street of the future. Northampton must prioritize parking availability for people with mobility issues and facilitate quick pickups from our various local shops and restaurants. We propose that all Main Street spots will be designated "Low Mobility/ 15-minute" spots.
As many have argued, Main Street parking spots should prioritize those who need to be close to the door of their destination. These spots should be reserved exclusively for those with documented mobility issues, signaled using an ADA placard or one issued by our City, or those who are stopping for quick pickups, with a 15-minute limit.
Longer-term parking for those who can walk will be routed toward our many side streets, parking lots, and the parking garage, which are still within proximity to the downtown and are currently under-utilized.
This approach will not only bring convenience to those in need but, because fewer cars will circulate, looking for parking, it will also significantly alleviate Main Street traffic congestion, supporting a smoother flow of passage for all and providing clear access for emergency vehicles.
Let's make our city more accessible and safe, respecting those with the most need for proximal parking, and tightening the bonds that hold our community together. Your voice makes a difference. Sign the petition today to help transform Main Street into a place for everyone.
