Push for the Passing of H.R.7354 - The Protection of Black Women and Girls Act
The Issue
In an urgent call to action, I want to bring your attention to the ongoing, relentless challenges facing black women and girls in our nation. Unfair disadvantages and socio-economic hurdles are stacked against this group, persisting unceasingly in every facet of life. This is personal to me, for this is a matter of human dignity, equity, and justice. We must act rapidly to alter this broken system, and address the persistent, needless obstacles we have placed on black women and girls.
Our determination is now steadfastly focused on urging lawmakers to pass H.R.7354 - the Protect Black Women and Girls Act. This crucial piece of legislation was introduced on June 24, 2020 by Ayanna Pressley (MA-7), aiming to establish an Interagency Task Force to examine the conditions and experiences of Black women and girls in education, economic development, health, labor and employment, housing, justice, and civil rights (Congress.gov).
According to the National Women's Law Center, Black women typically make only 63 cents for every dollar paid to their white, non-Hispanic male counterparts, leading to a yearly wage loss of $24,110 annually (National Women's Law Center, 2019). In education, Black girls are six times more likely to be suspended than white girls (NAACP). In health, Black women are disproportionately affected by various health disparities, including maternal mortality rates nearly three times higher than those of white women (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). These are not just statistics, but lived experiences for countless Black women and girls every day.
It is essential that we join together to support the urgent passage of the Protect Black Women and Girls Act. Our collective action can prompt crucial change, creating avenues for equal opportunities, and a society that safeguards the rights and welfare of every citizen, regardless of race or gender. Please, add your name to this pressing cause. Let our voices be heard and enact change. Sign the petition today.
