The Issue

As a collective of local business owners on the lower Sunshine Coast, we are facing a critical shortage of workforce. Our community, known predominantly as a retirement destination, struggles to fill job vacancies with the available Canadian citizens and permanent residents. What makes this situation even more challenging is our unique geographical placement — just 30 kilometers away from Vancouver with no direct road connection, heavily reliant on BC Ferries with limited sailings. These logistics add another layer of complexity to our staffing issues, as potential workers face significant commuting challenges.

Small businesses form the backbone of Canada’s vibrant economy. Emblematic of the diverse entrepreneurial spirit that our nation thrives on, these businesses generate employment and strengthen community ties. Yet, policy inconsistencies leave communities like ours at a disadvantage. Often categorized as rural, except when that classification would provide potential benefits, the lower Sunshine Coast is being overlooked, leading to dire consequences for our local enterprises.

With several businesses already operating on reduced schedules, and others on the brink of permanent closure due to lack of staff, the time for action is now. We propose the government initiates a pilot International Workers Program specifically targeted towards the lower Sunshine Coast. This program would be tailored to meet the peculiar needs of our community, allowing temporary international workers to fill the gaps in our labor market.

Such a program would not only address the immediate labor shortage but also bridge the cultural and demographic gaps that come with our aging community profile. By creating a pipeline of diverse talent, we can sustain and grow our local economy, ensuring that businesses continue to thrive, contributing to the nation's economic health.

Join us in urging the government to recognize the unique challenges faced by the lower Sunshine Coast and take actionable steps to implement an International Workers Program. Your signature can help us regain stability and ensure the community prospers.
