Punish Sak Surin / Muthu Raja's abusers

Punish Sak Surin / Muthu Raja's abusers
The Issue
Muthu Rajas abusers must be punished.
Muthu Raja's left leg was permanently disabled by a blow from mahout at a temple in Sri Lanka. He sufferd from multiple abscesses and pressure sore wounds on his body and bore scars of years of stabbing by bullhook. Yet he was made to wear spiked chains to work at temple processions without any rest or treatment.
Although we complained to Sri Lankan authorities repeatedly for 3 years, they refused to intervene as he was a foreign elephant gifted by the Thailand Government to Sri Lankan Government in 2001 and placed under the custody of Aluthgama Kande Viharaya Temple via a deed called "Sannas Patraya".
Finally in November 2022 the Thai Government intervened and brought Thai vets to Sri Lanka to treat him and are planning to take him back to Thailand on 2nd July 2023 for further treatment and retirement.
The Sannas Patra deed issued by former Sri Lankan President Chandrika Bandaranayike Kumatatunga in 2001, assigning ownership of Muthu Raja to the Aluthgama Kande Viharaya Temple is still active.
His abusers, the chief monk of the temple and mahout Roshan have not been brought to justice.
The Department of Wildlife Conservation officials that refused to treat Muthu Raja for 3 years and brought international shame on Sri Lanka have not been punished.
Further, the temple still retains custody of Sri Lankan elephant Kumari and her life is in danger at the hands of these abusers.
We request His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka Mr Ranil Wickramasinghe to cancel this Sannas Patraya, Rescue Elephant Kumari into safe custody of National Zoological Gardens Department and bring Muthu Rajas abusers and responsible Government officials to justice.
It is imperative that justice is served, and that those who have subjected this sentient being to such suffering are held accountable for their actions.
This is the only way Sri Lanka can truly show our respect and gratitude to the Thai people that are broken hearted by the abuse this Thai elephant had to face in Sri Lanka.
This will not only provide closure for Muthu Raja but also set a precedent that animal abuse will not be tolerated within the borders of Sri Lanka.
