Pledge to save Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary ,Nagar Road !!!
The Issue
The Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary fondly referred as the “Yerawada Birding Point” is a natural bird sanctuary on the Mula-Mutha river bank and as you may guess by the name it is dedicated to one of the greatest ornithologists of all time , Dr Salim Ali.
It has been host to not less than a variety of 30 different species of birds which include Siberian migratory birds and black headed ibis, ruddy shelduck and red wattles lapwings to name amongst a few. To add to this one could see as many as 25 species of butterflies as well.
Such a rare sight in a concrete jungle called Pune (which was fondly referred as a summer hill station) is facing one of the gravest challenge owing to Pune Metro Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor.
There are threats that the Pune Metro shall pass through Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. Formerly, the metro route was planned on Ahmednagar road from Gunjan chowk to Ramwadi, but as per the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) no construction can be carried out within 100 metres of the heritage site Aga Khan Palace. Hence, the metro route was changed and the new stretch was orchestrated through the bird sanctuary. As if it is a very tough thing to exercise? With all due respect if his Highness were alive he would rather have that the Metro pass in front of his palace than destroy the biology of his surroundings, especially if it is the bird sanctuary we are talking about.
There are talks that there might be a realignment of the route but with all said and done it is still going to damage the bird sanctuary which is a real shame in the name of development . Losing all rational by erratic cutting of trees to better public transport is never going to benefit anybody. It is high time that I appeal as a citizen that this savage act be stopped in the name of God.
The chances of trees to stay alive after being transplanted are very less and no matter how much the Pune Metro boasts about its tree transplantation technique some environments are to be just left untouched. I request all citizens to raise the alarm against this barbaric development and do whatever it is possible to stop this from happening or else days from now we would only lament and read in our morning papers about “Paradise Lost”.
The Pune Municipal Corporation, Pune Tourism can further promote this as a part of “Pune Darshan”.
