Stop cutting of trees and get an alternate plan for road development
The Issue
This petition is for objecting cutting of trees on Nanded Phata for widening of road (which is a valid concern) but please read the points stated below which will help understand why the objection in cutting of trees is necessary. The number of trees to be cut is 36 with species of Banyan (Vad), Flame tree(Gulmohar), Blue Jacaranda (Neelmohar), Indian Almond (Badam), Mahogany (Mohgany), African Tulip Tree (Pichkari) out of which the native banyan trees are most to be
cut. I would like to state few points against the tree cutting, which are as follows:
1. These trees are crucial especially in the current situation of pandemic. We all are aware of the horrifying and deadly impact of the Covid 19 virus on the respiratory capabilities. The banyan trees, well known for their functioning as the carbon sink, have all the more importance in the kind of area in question (i.e. where the trees are
located). This patch is a major road leading to the very popular tourist spots of Khadakwasala and Sinhgad etc. and thus is a major contributor to the carbon emissions and smoke, which only have a negative impact on the health and environment alike. Cutting down the only significant trees in this area, will only worsen the impact of the ongoing Covid 19 Pandemic especially in the area.
2. Air Quality Index is to be considered especially with all the waste burning, construction/ industries in area and other factors causing air pollution.
3.Apart from Covid 19, the trees in question are a part of the natural ecosystem and help maintain the environmental balance. Not only that but if sustained now they soon would account for natural heritage. The trees play an important role for commuters and small entrepreneurs who find shade amongst them while earning their daily bread. And it is for the same reason that while talking with them, they openly opposed the idea of trees being cut.
4.The current citizens to tree ratio is dismal at 1: 1.128 and every citizen needs at least 8 trees to survive in their life. So by cutting of trees, the situation will already worsen than it is today.
5. Additionally, the current situation of climate change/crisis gives these well-developed trees all the more importance rather than the relocated/replanted ones (As statistically relocated/replanted trees have almost no life).
