Pueblo NEEDS a community-based REC CENTER in Bessemer-Hugs, NOT GAS!
The Issue
Sign the petition to rebuild a better Bessemer, starting with a Rec Center on Northern. The Good as Gold Arts Initiative is a placemaking project that is a holistic, culturally grounded community‑revitalization movement that uses:
Art
Music
Technology
Mental health support
Youth mentorship
Cultural heritage
…to build a stronger, more united Steel City.
It’s not just an arts program—it’s a community healing and empowerment initiative rooted in Pueblo’s identity and driven by local voices.
Bessemer, affectionately known as B-Town, has always been a place rich in history and community spirit. Unfortunately, in recent times, our beloved community has been struggling. Every day, as I drive down the streets, I encounter more and more people begging for money. People who were once contributing members of our society are now trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty. It's heartbreaking to see how many young people are lost, while the city's best solution is to build yet another convenience store. The GAS STATION Madness has exacerbated this crisis, leaving those in our community burdened and hopeless. Unfortunately, it's a reality many of us witness and feel compelled to change.
By SIGNING the PETITION, you will be supporting the Good as Gold Community-Based Arts Initiative, and together we can transform Bessemer from a town in shambles to the Steel City we know it can be, filled with opportunity, hope, and support for all its residents. The proposed community-based arts initiative includes:
Youth Mentorship Program → hands‑on learning, confidence building, access to resources
Better Bessemer Center → tech, art, music, and leadership opportunities
Ray Aguilera Community Market → family‑centered collaboration and community building with outdoor market space and income/employment opportunities.
Community Planned or based ongoing projects:
Outdoor food market
Affordable housing for single parents
Live/work spaces for artists
Public entertainment spaces
Youth music & technology center Sources:
These projects aim to strengthen neighborhoods—especially Bessemer—through arts, culture, and economic opportunity.
🏛️ Mission & Core Philosophy
“To create a resilient and inclusive Pueblo… preserving the cultural heritage that shapes our Steel City Roots.”
Good as Gold Arts Initiative's central mission:
Resilience → helping the community heal from generational trauma and economic hardship.
Inclusion → ensuring equal access to arts, tech, and safe indoor/outdoor public spaces providing wellness resources.
Cultural heritage → honoring Pueblo’s steel‑mill history, diverse communities, and multigenerational identity.
Steel City Pride:
The repeated steel metaphors (“Blood of Steel,” “Steel Roots Run Deep”) reinforce Pueblo’s identity as a Steel City and use that symbolism to inspire unity and strength.

🌱 Overall Meaning of the Page
Taken together, the initiative is a holistic, culturally grounded community‑revitalization movement that uses:
Art
Music
Technology
Mental health support
Youth mentorship
Cultural heritage
…to build a stronger, more united Steel City.
It’s not just an arts program—it’s a community healing and empowerment initiative rooted in Pueblo’s identity and driven by local voices.
Inspiration can come from positive transformations seen in other towns that have opened such community centers. For instance, in cities across the United States, community centers have proven effective in reducing crime rates by providing a space for constructive activities and connection. They have become beacons of hope and engines of socio-economic improvement.
This initiative does more than offer physical space; it fosters a much-needed sense of unity. For families struggling to make ends meet, the project will be a crucial lifeline. For the youth, it will be a hub of learning and personal development. Our vision is for the Ray Aguilera Community Center/outdoor market to serve as a catalyst for change in Bessemer, helping lift our neighbors out of poverty and ignite a community-wide resurgence.
We have the opportunity to end the "gas station madness" and create a lasting impact for those in desperate need. Together, we can breathe new life into Bessemer and stop being mere witnesses to its decline. Our collective action can lead to meaningful change. Your signature will help us show community leaders and stakeholders that we are serious about this project and demand action. Please join us in making the Good as Gold Arts Initiative and a community center a reality by signing this petition. Let's stand together and support a brighter future for B-Town and the City of Steel!
