Publish An Unabridged Edition of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

John WebwrightIdaho, United States
Created March 6, 2023

The Issue

While Haruki Murakami's work The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle was being translated by Jay Rubin, its publisher Knopf Doubleday required him to cut approximately 25,000 words from the text. Once finished, he submitted both an abridged and unabridged edition to Knopf, who chose the former for publication.

At the time there seemed to be justice in this decision, as Knopf was taking a gamble publishing such a hefty book from an author who was virtually unknown in the western world. 26 years later, Murakami is now one of the most famous living faces of postmodernism. On Goodreads his works beat out Tolstoy and Woolf for number of ratings, and Chronicle itself has over 250,000 (more than any work by Joyce, Faulkner, or Proust) To publish an unabridged edition would be a profitable and relatively easy undertaking (as stated before, they have an unabridged edition). It is also an apt time for the publication of one, as the first volume is turning 30 next year.

It is about time one of the most influential authors of our generation received the justice he deserves in his English editions. The creation of this petition is to demonstrate to Knopf the desire of Murakami fans to read (and pay for) an unabridged edition of the text.
