Make PTV Myki fares free for short distance travels or fairly reduced
We believe public transport fares should be free for all for short distance travels.
Since 2012 no changes have ever been made to the way fares are charged based on distance. Myki still charges passengers for a two hour travel block and not a pay as you use system and each year Victorians endure increases to these fares.
In Melbourne passengers are charged the same amount whether they travel a short 1km journey or a 20km journey. With the technology currently in place and GPS enablement of all buses, trams and trains there is no excuse why a pay as you use system cannot be introduced.
The public transport in Sydney where they use the tried and proven Opal contactless system. The Opal card system allowed passengers to tap on a lot quicker.
More passengers actually paid for their trip
Bus and light rail fares were charged at a travel distance of 0-3km ($2.20)
Travel distance of 3km-8km ($3.66)
Travel distance of 8km+ ($4.71)
Also reduced fares on weekends and off peak times.
This is an example of what can be done and what should be done with the Myki system and make public transport fair for all people across Melbourne and regional Victoria. Stand up Melbourne for a fair & honest system.
Thank you all for your support and I truly hope the Minister for Public Transport Hon Ben Carroll and the Ombudsman for Public Transport support this change petition.
Also let's have an open discussion about these in the comment section and take it to a wider reach
