Public Photography is NOT a Crime!

The Issue

Public photography is NOT a crime!

Everyone has a camera.

From cell phones to laptops, doorbell cams to dash cams, CCTV, photo radar, cameras built into modern cars. There's no getting around it in 2022 - there are cameras everywhere!

While this might be unsettling for some, it is a Constitutionally protected right in Canada to take pictures on public property.

Public recording can aid in police investigations, report breaking news, deter criminals and encourage social and political discourse.

Section 2(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms spells out our guaranteed protections which allow us the right to freely express ourselves and to engage in freedom of the press and other media of information.

There are those in government and police forces who would like to limit your right to record in public. This is a breach of what the Supreme Court has called "the lynchpin" of democracy.

The mere act of recording in public, absent of a crime, cannot ever be illegal. Canadians are fed up with government overreach and will not stand by while our freedoms are eroded every day.

The George Floyd incident has shown us the power of a simple camera. This universally recognized human right is the first and last line of defense in a world of increasing misinformation.

WE THE UNDERSIGNED AFFIRM that public photography is NOT a crime in Canada.

We affirm that recording in public is beneficial to society.

We demand affirmation of this guaranteed freedom at all levels of government - from Federal to Provincial to Municipal.

We demand an end to all illegal laws, policies, service directives and guidelines which attempt to undermine the right to film in public in Canada.

We demand an end to false arrests and assaults by the police and R.C.M.P across the country on innocent civilians who did nothing more than peacefully record or take pictures on public property.
