Dear Parole Officers,
Here’s a clear comparison of retirement for Parole Officers in New Jersey vs. New York:
New Jersey (Parole Officers)
- Part of a law-enforcement–style pension system
-
25 years of service → retire at any age (full benefits)
- 20 years → may retire around age 55
- Considered closer to police/corrections retirement structure
- Earlier retirement is built in — many can leave in their late 40s–50s if they start young
New York (Parole Officers)
- Part of the standard civilian state employee retirement system
-
30 years of service + age 55 (older tiers)
-
Up to age 63 for full benefits (newer Tier 6)
-
No standard “25 and out” like Correction Officers
- Later retirement — often mid-50s to early 60s
It’s clear that NYS Parole Officers should be a part of a law enforcement union like the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA) in order to receive a “25 and out“ retirement pension.
