As you may already know, Gov. Hochul signed the ‘Less Is More Act’ into law on Friday September 17, 2021. Under the new law, people on parole will no longer be locked up for technical violations.
“Less is More" aims to shorten the length of parole supervision, “limit the circumstances” under which parolees can be reincarcerated and makes it more difficult for Parole Officers to violate parolees.
Our powers as Parole Officers have been diminished. We can no longer effectively do our jobs. This law will also reduce the number of Parole Officers needed in New York State. We’re afraid that our peace officer status along with our ability to carry firearms will be next.
Unfortunately, PEF failed to control the narrative in the media and inform the public that technical parole violations are routinely packaged alongside non-technical violations (i.e. new arrests). PEF should have invested our union dues on billboards, radio and television ads.
Please join us as we boycott PEF by opting out of the union. We can no longer support this white collar civilian union. Leaving PEF will give us a better chance of joining NYSCOPBA. Signing this petition alone will not help us break away from PEF, opting out will. Click on the link below to opt out.
In solidarity,
New York State Parole Officers
