The Issue

As part of our active citizenship in school, me and my group have decided to start a petition to change the voting age to 16. We think it should be 16 as it is a huge part of our lives and ties into being part of a democracy. By being part of it, we should have the right to vote as it will highly affect our future and the way we live. So we think it is unfair that we don't get a say.

Additionally, the original voting age of 18 came from that being the age you are allowed to join the military, however, the ages have changed. So it now has little relevence to it.
RAF: (airman) 15 years and 9 months
Army: (soldier) 16 (officer) 18
Navy: (rating role) 16 (officer) 18

We understand that you have to be 18 to do other things, for example, purchasing cigarettes, alcohol, and fireworks. However these differentiate from voting as they are different things and affect you in completely different way. Voting is a young person's chance to be involved in politics, whereas cigarettes and alcohol can have a terrible effect on people's health. Little damage can be made from voting and it is likely that our futures will be protected more and not have to accept the views of the older generations.

Pros:
Highly impacts us
Gets young people involved in politics
Supports being part of a democracy
Cons:
Not everyone has a full understanding of voting
Unable to take time to vote
Are busy
