The Issue

Many families, coaches, and athletes in Leon County, Florida, are deeply concerned about the recent decision to close access to track facilities within our local schools. This decision sends a troubling message about the level of support being provided to youth sports and student-athletes in our community. Young athletes, who have dedicated countless hours to training, are now facing unnecessary obstacles in preparing for competition on national stages.

Track and field sports have a rich history in Leon County, fostering skills, discipline, and teamwork among our youth. These facilities have not only been used for honing the talents of young athletes but also serve as a vital resource for coaches and trainers in planning effective training sessions. They play an essential role in encouraging healthy lifestyles and athletic excellence from an early age.

The decision to close these tracks limits opportunities for both casual and competitive runners. Many athletes rely on these facilities for their daily workouts and pre-meet preparations. Without accessible tracks, they are forced to seek alternative—and often less ideal—spaces, which can hinder their performance and progress. Inaccessible tracks deter athletics development and diminish the achievements of our youth athletes.

Based on the positive data observed by local sports committees and feedback from community members, open track facilities have been directly linked to improved athletic performance and increased participation in local sports. With obesity being a national concern, providing open, safe spaces for exercise is vital in combating this trend.

We propose that Leon County schools consider a schedule that allows the public to access these track facilities during after-school hours and on weekends. This compromise maintains security during school hours while facilitating community engagement and supporting the developmental needs of our young athletes.

Support our future athletic leaders by reopening these venues for public use and ensuring that our young athletes have the resources they need to thrive. Your signature can make a difference in reversing this restrictive closure, helping foster a community where sports are celebrated and accessible to all. Please sign this petition to reclaim public access to Leon County Schools' track facilities.
