Over the past few months, I have witnessed the impact of homelessness in our community, especially with the new law in Indiana that criminalizes being without a home. This law is a harsh reminder of the need for safe, accessible shelter for those who find themselves on the streets through no fault of their own. Homelessness is not a crime, and jail is not the solution.

The United Caring Shelter has been a beacon of hope for many in our community. Their White Flag Program provides emergency shelter during extreme weather conditions, offering sanctuary and comfort to those with nowhere else to turn. However, this vital program is only operational during certain months of the year due to limited funding.

Every year, as the seasons change, countless individuals wait in uncertainty, unsure if they will have a safe place to rest. It’s heartbreaking to think that, when the thermometer drops or the sun beats down mercilessly, there might not be an open door for those in need.

With the state's recent legal changes, it is more crucial than ever for us to support solutions that offer dignity, safety, and hope. We urgently need the state of Indiana to allocate more funding to the United Caring Shelter so they can operate their White Flag Program year-round.

Providing year-round support will ensure those experiencing homelessness have a safe haven every day of the year, reducing the risk of incarceration simply for seeking shelter during non-designated program months.
