Provide Transperth train services for 4am airport arrivals
The issue
Working as a FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) worker isn't just a job; it's a lifestyle that affects thousands in Western Australia. Like many others, I am part of this workforce, and managing our schedules around public transport can be a logistical nightmare. Every shift, with thousands of others, I endure a long drive to Perth Airport, only to leave my car parked there for extended periods, incurring significant costs. This isn't just inconvenient; it’s also a serious safety concern, as fatigued driving becomes a real hazard after long work hours on returning home.
Currently, there are no public transportation options to support FIFO workers who may need to reach Perth Airport from 4:30am for their flights. Chartered flights begin in the early hours to access work sites, yet we are perplexingly neglected by current transportation services. This lack of early morning train services shows a severe oversight in understanding and accommodating the demands of critical sectors that are the backbone of our local economy. Transperth's response to this issue, is that they can't run 24hrs per day due to budget restraints. However, they defend a decision to neglect thousands while running near empty services a few hours earlier. Our roads are inarguably inadequate and politicians routinely ask us to reduce use of freeways in favourof public transport, yet elect to do nothing to make this viable alternative available.
There is a clear and urgent need for Transperth to assess and respond to this pressing issue. By implementing scheduled train services to Perth Airport in the early hours, we can provide access and safety for FIFO workers, reduce our reliance on personal vehicles, and ease the financial burden associated with costly airport parking.
We ask Transperth and local government officials to consider this significant gap in service. Access to fair and safe transportation should not be a privilege but a standard. We need broad changes that see the reality of our lives and address them with tangible solutions.
Join our call for more comprehensive public transport services for FIFO workers. Sign this petition and help us drive this change.
