The Issue
My name is Yevhenii Zhyrnov q, and my family and I fled Ukraine shortly after the Russian invasion began on February 24, 2022. Like countless other Ukrainians, we sought safety and a chance to rebuild our lives in America. However, without Temporary Protected Status (TPS), our future remains uncertain, and we face the risk of deportation back to a war-torn country.
The U.S. has always been a beacon of hope for those seeking refuge from oppression and conflict. The situation in Ukraine is dire, with ongoing military aggression resulting in thousands of civilian casualties, mass displacement, and unimaginable suffering. As of October 2023, over 8 million people have been displaced within Ukraine alone, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The need for humanitarian support is urgent and overwhelming.
Providing TPS to Ukrainians who have arrived in the U.S. since February 24, 2022, is a necessary step in extending compassion and offering protection to those who desperately need it. TPS will not only grant security from deportation but also provide work authorization, allowing people like my family to contribute positively to the communities welcoming us.
Currently, many Ukrainian nationals are relying on uncertain temporary visa statuses, which offer little stability and certainty. TPS would ensure they do not live in fear of forced return during these tumultuous times. Countries like Canada and the European Union have already offered protective measures to Ukrainian refugees; it's time for the United States to do the same and fulfill its moral and humanitarian obligations.
By granting TPS, the U.S. would reinforce its commitment to human rights and its historic tradition of being a safe harbor for refugees. We call on the Department of Homeland Security and Congress to immediately grant Temporary Protected Status to Ukrainians who arrived post-February 24, 2022. We, as a community, can unite in showing our support for the Ukrainian people.
