Provide sensitivity training for first responders in Fort Wayne

Provide sensitivity training for first responders in Fort Wayne
The Issue
As a parent of a child with an intellectual disability, I am deeply concerned about the potential for misunderstanding or misrepresentation in interactions between my child and first responders. Without proper sensitivity training regarding individuals with Autism, ADHD, and other intellectual disabilities, there is a heightened risk of such encounters resulting in harm or even fatality. This fear is shared by many parents and caregivers within our community.
Fort Wayne is home to a diverse population of individuals with varying needs, including those on the autism spectrum and those with ADHD and intellectual disabilities. Despite the challenges that these individuals face, they deserve the same respect, understanding, and safety during emergency interactions as anyone else. Our first responders do an incredible job serving our community, but they need the proper tools and training to handle such situations effectively and compassionately.
Statistics from the Autism Society indicate that individuals with autism are seven times more likely to have interactions with law enforcement than the general population, often due to misunderstandings of their behavior. A study published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders highlights that with appropriate training, officers have been able to de-escalate situations more effectively, resulting in safer outcomes for all involved.
I am calling on the Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) and other emergency response teams in our area to implement comprehensive sensitivity training programs. By doing so, we equip our first responders with the understanding necessary to recognize behaviors related to Autism, ADHD, and other intellectual disabilities, and respond in a manner that is supportive and calming.
The proposed training should include input from experts in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities and should involve interactive modules and real-life scenarios. Such programming would not only benefit those with disabilities but would also strengthen the bond of trust between our first responders and the community they serve.
Please join me in urging our city's leadership and first responder teams to prioritize sensitivity training for our emergency personnel. By signing this petition, you are supporting a safer, more inclusive community for everyone in Indiana, Fort Wayne, Allen, and surrounding counties.
