Provide funding for FND multidisciplinary clinics in the NHS
The Issue
Living with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) can be an isolating experience. I am one of the many individuals who, upon diagnosis, was simply handed a website link and discharged from the neurological team, expected to navigate the complicated world of referrals and support by myself. Physio, pain clinics, mental health support—these are avenues I had to fight to access, and even then, without a multidisciplinary approach, the care feels disjointed and incomplete.
Functional Neurological Disorder is a life-changing diagnosis. However, awareness remains alarmingly low in schools, workplaces, doctor's clinics, pharmacies, and hospitals. It's disheartening to see that there are no patient education leaflets, no dedicated support groups unless they are set up by yourself or mental health services specifically tailored to the needs of those with FND. Many doctors and clinics lack the funding and understanding to provide comprehensive care.
We urge the NHS to allocate specific funding to establish multidisciplinary clinics for FND patients. These clinics should offer coordinated care involving neurologists, mental health professionals, physiotherapists, and support groups. Patients should be signposted towards comprehensive care immediately upon diagnosis, receiving regular monitoring by a team of both physical and mental health experts, as well as access to exercise and support classes.
Having a dedicated multidisciplinary clinic would not only improve the quality of life for patients but also reduce the long-term healthcare costs associated with mismanagement and lack of support for FND. By providing holistic care and increasing awareness among healthcare professionals and the public, the NHS can ensure that individuals with FND receive the support and treatment they deserve.
