Provide Free Parking for Lawrence Public School Teachers

The Issue

In Lawrence, MA, community teachers like myself dedicate our lives to nurturing the minds of our children and shaping the future of our community. We spend countless hours planning lessons, grading assignments, and engaging in professional development to ensure that each child receives a quality education. One challenge we face daily, however, is the struggle for affordable parking. This is not just an expense, but an added stress that distracts from our primary mission – educating the children of Lawrence.

Given the essential role teachers play, it is only fair that we receive support in reducing these barriers. The cost of parking is not trivial and can amount to over $1,500 a year, which is a significant financial burden on a teacher's salary. This is money that could be used for classroom supplies, professional development, or even living expenses. Other cities have recognized this and have provided free parking to alleviate such stress, allowing teachers to focus on what truly matters: their students.

Let's learn from these examples and implement a similar policy in Lawrence. Providing free parking permits for teachers would not only be a gesture of appreciation for their hard work but would also enhance their ability to perform without the additional stress of parking costs. We need the support of the Lawrence School Committee and local government leaders to address this issue urgently.

Teachers are the backbone of our educational system, nurturing young minds and investing in our community's future. It is time to give back to those who give so much. Lawrence can become a leader in supporting educators by offering free parking for all public school teachers.

Join me in this effort by signing this petition to provide free parking in our schools. Together, we can show our teachers that their contributions are valued and help them continue to make a difference without the burden of parking fees. We owe it to them, and to the children they teach, to make this change now.

This is why I always say: even when you think you're advancing good policy, you might be unintentionally causing harm elsewhere. That’s why it’s critical to bring everyone to the table, because no decision exists in a vacuum. One of my long-standing advocacy points has been relocation support and/or underground parking for the new schools. But those options were never seriously considered. Now, the reality is this: the same teachers we fail to pay equitably compared to surrounding communities are being asked to pay over $1,500 a year just to park at work. That’s not just unfair, it’s punitive. And yet, the School Committee often gets labeled as the “decision makers.” In truth, these decisions were made by the Lawrence Alliance for Education, the City Council, and the Mayor. We’ve consistently advocated for what we believed was right. We pushed, we spoke up, we fought for equity. But ultimately, they made the call. So if you're frustrated, please direct your messages to those who had the final say, not us. Office of the Mayor - Lawrence, MA: https://www.facebook.com/MayorLawrenceMA The time is now to provide free parking passes for our educators. While they’re shaping the future of this city, they shouldn’t be burdened with fees just to show up and teach. Respecting their work means removing unnecessary barriers, not adding them.
