The Issue

Every child deserves access to nutritious food, a fundamental right that significantly impacts their ability to learn, grow, and succeed. However, in the United States, nearly 14.9 million children live in food-insecure homes. This staggering statistic highlights the urgent need for universal free lunch programs across public schools.

Research shows that children who receive adequate nutrition are more attentive in class, perform better academically, and have improved physical health. Despite this, many schools do not offer free lunch to all students, creating a barrier to education equality and success. Socioeconomic status should never determine a child's access to food.

Implementing a nationwide free lunch program will alleviate the burden on low-income families and ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive. The National School Lunch Program, which currently provides reduced-cost meals to an estimated 30 million children daily, has already shown success in mitigating hunger. Expanding this program to include free lunches for all students will further break down the stigma associated with receiving free meals, create a more equitable system, and foster an inclusive environment for all children.

We urge the Department of Education and local governments to prioritize this initiative. By investing in our children’s future, we are investing in the future of our society. Join us in making a tangible change in the lives of millions of children. Sign this petition to support the implementation of universal free lunch programs in schools. Together, we can ensure that no child has to learn on an empty stomach.
