The Issue

Unpaid carers often face overwhelming challenges as they selflessly dedicate their time and efforts to look after loved ones in need. Consider the case of Jane, a devoted mother and daughter. By day, she cares for her son with autism, ensuring he receives the attention and support he needs to thrive. By night, she tends to her aging mother, who requires constant medical supervision due to her battle with dementia. Despite her tireless work, Jane receives no financial compensation for the countless hours she dedicates to her family.

Unpaid carers like Jane are the unsung heroes of our communities. According to Carers UK, there are over 6.5 million carers in the United Kingdom, and an estimated 800,000 of them care for more than one person. Despite their indispensable contribution to society, many struggle financially, with 72% of carers stating that they are worse off financially due to their caring responsibilities.

Unpaid carers often have to leave their jobs or reduce their working hours, leading to significant financial stress. Without proper financial support, they may not be able to provide the necessary care for their loved ones or sustain their own well-being.

To address this critical issue, we urge the government to introduce a financial support system for unpaid carers. This system could take the form of a Carer's Allowance that adequately reflects the cost of living and the invaluable service these carers provide. Implementing such a policy would not only offer financial relief but also demonstrate society's appreciation for their hard work and sacrifices.

By signing this petition, you are standing in solidarity with millions of carers who deserve recognition and financial security for their dedication. Let's call on our government to take urgent action and ensure no carer is left unsupported."
