On a fateful night in December 1995, my life changed forever. As a single mother, I dedicated myself to the community, but never thought it would cost me the life of my cherished 3-year-old son, Casson Xavier Evans. That tragic night during what was known as the summer of violence, Casson was killed in a drive-by shooting as he innocently sat beside his brother in the backseat of our car. The loss was insufferable as 21 gunshots pierced the silence, leaving my little buddy bleeding out in my arms with his last breath echoing a painful goodbye.

For over 25 years, I've dedicated my heart and soul to strengthening our community — a passion that began with rescuing a relative from harm's way. Throughout the years, my focus has always been others, ensuring safety, advocacy, and support spread throughout the community. Yet, despite these hundreds of hours of unpaid labor, I have never received a financial salary, which has repeatedly put my family and me in a precarious financial position.

It's time for our community and governmental bodies to recognize and support long-term community advocates who sacrifice daily to prevent tragedies similar to Casson’s. By providing a stable financial salary for dedicated community workers, we can ensure these individuals are sustained and empowered to continue their essential work.

This proposal isn’t merely personal; it’s part of a broader movement to support those often unrecognized but deeply needed in violence-prone areas like our own. When advocates are financially supported, they can amplify their outreach efforts, broaden crime prevention programs, and facilitate community healing initiatives — changes that can save countless lives.

I urge municipalities and relevant governing bodies to create grants, provide stipends or establish positions that financially compensate community advocates. This foundational financial support will not only acknowledge the vital work being done but also inspire more individuals to join these efforts, knowing their livelihoods can be supported as well.
