I am reaching out to shed light on the appalling conditions faced by inmates at the Yuma Cheyenne Unit, a facility under the Arizona Department of Corrections (AZDOC). My family members, along with countless others, are enduring insufferable conditions in this institution, where temperatures soar unbearably high. Despite this, they are left without air conditioning units or basic amenities to cope with the sweltering heat, such as cold water or ice, which the correctional officers fail to provide. It is utterly inhumane. Remarkably, even animals in a dog pound receive better care and relief from the heat.

The reality within Yuma Cheyenne Unit is shocking and unacceptable. Arizona prisons receive significant funding on a per-inmate basis, yet the lack of a standard of care in extreme weather conditions reveals a concerning prioritization of profit over human dignity and welfare. This issue is not merely about comfort; it speaks to the humane treatment and rights of individuals who, despite their circumstances, deserve to live in conditions that do not compromise their health or dignity.

Extreme temperatures can pose severe health risks, including heat exhaustion, heatstroke, dehydration, and other heat-related ailments. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, institutions are supposed to maintain comfortable and safe living conditions as part of their operational standards. However, Yuma Cheyenne Unit falls woefully short of these standards.

We are calling on the Arizona Department of Corrections to take immediate action to install air conditioning units in the Yuma Cheyenne Unit and ensure that all inmates have access to sufficient cooling measures and cold filtered drinking water to protect their wellbeing. There is a pressing need to align the facility's conditions with basic human rights principles and regulations.
