The Issue

Prayer is an integral part of my daily life. As a Muslim, fulfilling my religious obligation of five daily prayers is not just a routine, but a necessity that fills my spirit and guides my day. However, finding a suitable space for prayer while I'm at Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga has always been a challenge. Praying in an open public space is quite uncomfortable. It often draws attention, making this personal practice awkward rather than peaceful.

Square One is one of the largest shopping malls in Ontario, frequented by thousands of visitors every day, a significant portion of whom are Muslims needing a private space for prayer. This is not only a personal concern, but it also represents the needs of many other Muslim shoppers and employees at the mall who face similar struggles.

There is a growing necessity for places of prayer and contemplation within commercial spaces to accommodate the diverse population it serves. Implementing a dedicated prayer room would be a substantial step towards inclusivity and would demonstrate Square One’s commitment to accommodating the needs of all its visitors. This will encourage more families to visit without worrying about missing their prayers or having to leave the mall in search of a mosque or private space outside.

Other major shopping centers have already embraced this concept, recognizing the importance of providing diverse services that cater to all communities. For instance, the West Edmonton Mall in Alberta and the Eaton Centre in Toronto both provide such faculties, setting an example for others to follow.

Including a prayer room at Square One would be an easy, yet impactful, project that would greatly enhance the shopping experience for many individuals by providing them with the comfort and peace they deserve.

Let's encourage Square One to take this inclusive step forward and support their diverse customer base by signing this petition. Together, we can make a significant impact in improving the shopping experience for everyone.
