The Issue

As a runner and frequent walker in the area, crossing the bridge on Amboy Road near Lyman Street has become increasingly hazardous due to the greenway being washed away by Hurricane Helene under the bridge. What was once a safe passage for pedestrians has turned into an alarming spot where safety is compromised daily. Often, I find myself and others stranded, waiting for a break in traffic, hoping that a driver will stop to let us cross the busy street.

This very location plays a crucial role in the Asheville community as a connective artery between neighborhoods, recreational spaces, and businesses. Yet, the deteriorated condition under the bridge poses a serious risk of injurious crashes. Let's be the city that takes action before a traumatic event happens that could take a life.

Our aim is to advocate for a concrete safety improvement at this critical crossing. An upgraded pedestrian crossing with clear signage, enhanced lighting, or even a pedestrian-activated signal would drastically improve safety. Such infrastructure enhancements are crucial not only for runners and walkers like myself but for everyone who relies on this route.

We urge the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to prioritize this pedestrian safety project. By focusing efforts here, we can prevent potential accidents and ensure a secure environment for all community members. Please lend your voice to this cause. With your support, we can push for these necessary improvements and reclaim the safe crossing we deserve. Sign this petition to advocate for a safe pedestrian crossing at the Amboy Rd bridge.

Update: DOT is aware of this issue.  Now is the time to speak up loudly so we can be heard that we need a temporary solution now as the rebuild continues.  We should not have to fight for safety nor should the budget dictate pedestrian well-being.
