Protest the location of the Mohave Valley gas power plants
The Issue
I am writing this petition out of deep concern and a personal responsibility to protect my community in Mohave Valley, Arizona. As a resident who cherishes the tranquility and safety that we enjoy, I cannot stand idly by while the aquifer permit for the proposed gas power plants threatens to compromise our air, water, and overall environment. These plants, planned to be located dangerously close to our homes, pose a real risk of turning our neighborhood into another cautionary tale, akin to the disaster in Hinckley, California, where the contamination had devastating health impacts on the residents.
The proposed gas power plants will compromise our aquifer, a primary source of water for our community. Power plant operations, particularly gas-fired ones, are known for their potential to leak harmful chemicals, including heavy metals and carcinogens, into the surrounding soil and water. A study conducted by the United States Geological Survey reported that such contaminants in groundwater can lead to serious health issues, including increased cancer rates, kidney problems, and developmental delays in children.
Moreover, the air quality will undoubtedly suffer. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas released during the lifecycle of gas plants, will contribute significantly to our area's carbon footprint. Methane escapes at various stages of production and use, and its atmospheric concentration has increased more in the last 50 years than any other time period. Additionally, nitrogen oxides emitted by gas plants are major contributors to air pollution, creating smog that can trigger asthma attacks and other respiratory problems particularly in vulnerable populations like our children and elderly.
Economic concerns are also at stake. Natural gas prices are notoriously volatile, which could eventually lead to increased energy prices for us, the consumers. There are many reasons to prioritize renewable energy solutions over fossil fuels not only for their sustainability but for their financial benefits. Investment in solar or wind energy generation would create jobs right here in Mohave Valley and set a standard for environmentally conscious practices across the state of Arizona.
Let’s not wait for the damages to happen like others before us. We need to take proactive action to protect our drinking water, air quality, and local economy before irreversible damage is done. Therefore, I urge everyone who cares about the future of our community to support this petition. Let us send a strong message to the decision-makers urging them to deny the aquifer permit for the Mohave Valley gas power plants. To safeguard our community from potential ecological disaster, sign this petition today and make your voice heard.
