Protect Your Health and Safety in the Federal Budget

The federal budget currently proposed by Congress slashes critical funding for food safety and water programs, threatening the health and safety of all Americans. This includes deep cuts in meat inspection, despite the massive recalls of the past few years, and dramatically underfunding necessary water system improvements.

President Obama's proposed budget is not much better. Both budgets fail to provide basic services that most of us expect, while keeping spending that directly benefits and subsidizes large corporations.

Can you send this video to your members of Congress and ask them take action to make sure these budgets will provide for basic services that protect our health and safety?

Letter to
U.S. House of Representatives
U.S. Senate
As your constituent, I urge you to protect funding for essential programs that ensure our health and safety in the federal budget. The proposed budget slashes critical funding for food safety and water programs, threatening the health and safety of your constituents.

Specifically, I encourage you to protect these programs:

-Fully fund the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service; if they don't have enough money, meat and poultry will go uninspected, and could cause widespread illness.

-Fully fund the FDA's food safety program so that it has the resources necessary to implement new inspection systems for our imported food and inspect domestic facilities more than once every ten years.

- Increase federal funding to the drinking water and clean water state revolving funds so that communities large and small can have access to clean and safe water without putting an additional burden on ratepayers.

Be sure to check out the new video, "Washington Burger" from Food and Water Watch - http://action.foodandwaterwatch.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=6262. With an animated Speaker Boehner serving President Obama a post-budget cut hamburger, it makes the point about why cutting food safety protections is a loss for the American public.

I look forward to hearing from you,
