The Issue

A Personal Story That Hits Home

As a parent, I want my daughter to feel safe wherever she goes. She recently graduated high school and started at a local technical college here in South Carolina. But one day, something happened that shook her sense of security. After class, she used the women’s restroom and, upon leaving the stall, found a man with a full beard, dressed in a skirt, standing at the sink. This moment left her so uncomfortable that she now avoids using the restroom on campus entirely.

No one should feel unsafe or uneasy in a space meant for privacy and comfort. This experience isn’t just my daughter’s—it’s a growing concern for women and girls across South Carolina. Our wives, daughters, sisters, and friends deserve restrooms where they feel secure, respected, and protected.

Why This Matters

Restrooms are private, personal spaces. When policies allow anyone to enter based on self-identification, it can lead to situations that cause fear, discomfort, or even potential harm. This isn’t about denying anyone’s identity—it’s about ensuring the safety and privacy of women and girls in vulnerable settings. Stories like my daughter’s are becoming more common, and it’s time to act.

We’re calling on South Carolina’s leaders to pass clear, common-sense laws requiring individuals to use restrooms that match their biological sex as assigned at birth. This policy would:

•  Protect Privacy: Ensure women and girls have a safe, private space without fear of unexpected encounters.

•  Enhance Safety: Reduce the risk of misuse or abuse in restrooms.

•  Restore Comfort: Allow everyone to use these facilities with confidence and peace of mind.
