Protect Women's Health Care: Stop Stupak

Protect Women's Health Care: Stop Stupak

The Issue

Earlier this month, the House passed the Stupak Amendment to their health care reform bill, which would be one of the biggest setbacks to women's health in recent decades - unless we stand together and stop it.

That's why we're launching this petition, because women must not be denied access to safe and legal medical procedures.

Join us by signing the petition and help build pressure to remove the discriminatory, extreme, anti-choice Stupak Amendment from the final health care reform bill!

We the undersigned oppose inclusion of the Stupak Amendment in any health care reform legislation because it would be one of the biggest setbacks to women's health in recent decades.

The Stupak Amendment overturns a difficult and delicate compromise that has held firm for decades: Women can use their own private funds for legal reproductive health care procedures, but federal funds cannot be used for abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or to protect the life of the mother.

The Stupak Amendment discriminates against women by taking away health coverage they already have - and tells women who participate in the new health insurance exchange that they can't even use their own funds to buy a policy that includes abortion coverage.

The Stupak Amendment is discriminatory, extreme, and just plain wrong.

We urge the defeat of any effort to include this amendment in the final health care reform bill sent to President Obama.

CherokeeGirl for ChangePetition StarterI didn't pay attention to politics except from a dissenting viewpoint during the Reagan / Bush 41 years. I prospered during the Clinton era, so I knew he must have been doing something right. I've always been a registered democrat, but just not engaged or empowered to affect any real change. January of 2008 when I first saw Barack Obama speak he awoke my inner activist. I'm very excited about this new era we are living. We have a lot of work ahead, but it's a relief to know we are heading in the right (left) direction. I now live and breathe politics and world affairs, and feel like I can make a difference in the world. I realize now that citizens must be active in their government. :)
