PROTECT WILLARD SQUARE - Enact a Moratorium on New Development

The Issue

Willard Square, a unique residential village square, is threatened by inappropriate over-development due to the City of South Portland’s weak Village Commercial Willard (VCW) zoning ordinances.

The City of South Portland needs to conduct traffic and parking studies, implement design review, and conduct public forums to properly address the impact that further development will have on the square and its surrounding neighborhood. Creating adequate zoning standards will foster an atmosphere that is satisfactory to developers, neighbors and the interests of the nearby fire station and elementary school.

We respectfully request a moratorium on any new development, to be enacted immediately, in order to allow for the careful consideration of the best zoning practices for Willard Square.
