Local activists representing the 501c(3) non-profit Save Belmar Park, Inc. have taken this campaign in Lakewood, Colorado to court and would appreciate additional donations due to their obvious legal fees that are accumulating. Their fund raising is hosted at: https://www.gofundme.com/f/save-belmar-park
Opponents are relying primarily on name calling and proclaiming 'housing shortage, housing shortage'.
It still escapes the notice of some residents (and perhaps even jurists) that the demand for housing is not robust as the county scrambles to close schools fast enough to accommodate the declining population.
Due to declining student enrollment, the school district has even sold off entire school buildings in a panic effort to shore up their deteriorating finances which are now tens of millions of dollars short due to fewer students and the per pupil funding that is lost. The district has closed over 20 schools since 2021.
Local merchants have also been closing stores.
Does that sound like economic growth to you? Does that sound like we need to sacrifice habitats to build market rate housing in sensitive natural areas?
A major core issue of this debate is that land development in Lakewood and elsewhere needs to be protective of habitats and wildlife. Instead of monetizing natural areas and habitats with large housing projects and possible hotel projects, these sensitive areas need protection.
