Protect Westminster Community: Relocate King George’s Hostel

Protect Westminster Community: Relocate King George’s Hostel
The Issue
We, the residents, business owners, and workers of Great Peter Street, Westminster, are calling for urgent action regarding the ongoing disruption caused by King George’s Hostel.
Everyone in our area is suffering. We are facing persistent anti-social behaviour from the hostel's residents — including open drug use, public intoxication, aggressive conduct, vomiting, public urination, shouting, littering, and foul-smelling waste on our doorsteps. Violent fights involving weapons occur on the weekly basis. This is not an occasional nuisance — it is a daily threat to our well-being, dignity, and ability to live and work safely.
Our community has been left to manage the consequences:
- Residents feel unsafe in their own homes.
- Businesses are losing customers due to the hostile environment.
- Workers face verbal abuse and physical intimidation while simply trying to do their jobs.
Despite repeated complaints to the local council, police, and hostel operators, the issues remain unresolved. The current location and management of this facility are unsuitable for a densely populated street with both residents and businesses.
What makes this worse is that last year Westminster City Council spent over £2.2 million of public money from council tax and business rates to fund this very hostel, according to Cabinet Member Report dated June 2024. Yet there are no publicly available financial reports from the hostel and no transparency or oversight on how this money is used. The Council, by continuing to fund the problem, is turning a blind eye to the damage being done to its own constituents - a clear conflict of interest that leaves our community unprotected.
We are calling on Westminster City Council and the relevant housing authorities to relocate King George’s Hostel to a more appropriate site and restore safety, order, and dignity to our neighbourhood.
We ask for action.
