The Issue

As a local resident living in proximity to Wenhill Lane, Calne, I am deeply alarmed by the proposed planning of 180 houses. The traditional habitat that nature has claimed in this area is now at risk and as a community, we must raise our voices.

This area, unspoilt as of yet, serves as a fundamental pathway for wildlife accessing the river and surrounding areas. Protected wildlife are in this area, otters have been identified in the river and hedgehogs are all around this natural haven. The inevitable noise and pollution that comes with such vast construction projects would be detrimental to local wildlife, which is already suffering the consequences of ongoing urban sprawl.

The potential effect on wildlife does not stand alone in the list of consequences we face. Equally pressing is the issue of traffic and air pollution. Silver Street, alongside the entire town centre, already navigates its way through strenuous traffic during peak hours. Our community, our roads, and our air quality are at risk of being compromised by the inevitable influx of additional vehicles. Imagine the queues and consider the increase in air pollution that the expected extra traffic would cause.

This proposed construction project will drastically alter the town’s character, changing not just our beloved town but also our treasured countryside. Let's express our concern over the loss of habitat, the increase in traffic and resulting pollution, and protect the identity of our town. The views of the local people must be considered before the green light is given to such a massive development.

I implore you, those in decision-making positions and those who care about our town and its environment, to sign this petition. Together, we can make a difference. Stand with us in the fight against the proposed building of 180 houses around Wenhill Lane. Protect our town, protect our wildlife, protect Calne.
