Some encouraging news
Looks like Gimli is taking the many concerns about the berm idea seriously and taking a step back to reconsider. So at least for now, that crisis is averted.
According to RM staff member Christine Payne, Manager of Public Engagement, the issue of snake den protection will now be postponed and NOT brought to council at the May 13 meeting after all.
She indicated that in the coming weeks: a site visit to the den will be arranged, I guess for staff and maybe mayor and council; a consultation with MB Conservation will be sought; and less invasive alternatives to massive berms will be considered. These other options include vertical posts as barricades and planting trees to obscure the access routes into the snake den.
She figured mayor and council would address the matter of snake den protection perhaps as early as their June meeting. Fingers crossed they will vote in favour of a low impact, effective solution that can be implemented soon because the snakes are emerging and already some have been run over and killed by ATVs.
It is still a good idea to write mayor and council urging them make a timely decision to implement a non-invasive (non-berm) solution to protect these vulnerable snakes.
