The Issue

For hundreds of Bristolians, outdoor fitness classes on the Clifton Downs are a vital part of our community life, physical and mental well-being. These classes offer an accessible, sustainable way for people to stay healthy and combat feelings of isolation. They are led by small, local businesses deeply embedded in the community.

The Threat: These essential gatherings are now under serious threat from the Downs Committee's proposed new licensing arrangements.

The proposed scheme includes severe restrictions that will make it nearly impossible for many residents to participate. Punitive fees and limits on exercise zones and participant numbers threaten the survival of the small local fitness businesses that run these classes. These changes will lead to the closure of valuable community resources, stripping Bristolians of affordable health and wellness options.

In an era when both physical and mental health are paramount, it is counterproductive to hinder the very projects that promote them.

Our Demand: We urge the Bristol Downs Committee and relevant stakeholders to immediately reconsider these restrictive and punitive licensing proposals.

We ask for a balanced, supportive approach that recognises the immense long-term benefits of outdoor fitness for the entire city of Bristol. We demand alternative ways to accommodate and support these vital services, not restrict them.

Please stand with us to protect our community's health, support small businesses, and ensure the continuation of inclusive outdoor fitness sessions on the Downs. Sign and share this petition today!
