The Issue

As an alumnus of the Upward Bound program, I can personally attest to the transformative support it provided me on my journey to college. From financial assistance to invaluable academic tutoring and enriching field trips, Upward Bound was a cornerstone in my educational development. I am one of countless students whose lives have been positively impacted by this program.

On Monday, September 15th, Northshore Community College was notified that the federal government will no longer be funding the Upward Bound program in Lynn, Massachusetts. This abrupt decision means that the program is slated to close its office by September 30th, leaving many future students without the guidance and support they desperately need.

While North Shore Community College is claiming to be seeking alternative funding sources, the uncertainties are vast, with no guarantees of obtaining grants elsewhere. This process could take months, and during this critical time, many students will be left in limbo, losing out on key opportunities that could shape their futures.

Upward Bound is not just a program; it is a lifeline for many underprivileged and first-generation college students who rely on its services to overcome barriers and seize educational opportunities. The statistics support the success of Upward Bound: students who participate are four times more likely to earn a college degree compared to those from similar backgrounds who do not.

We urge the federal administration to reconsider its decision and restore funding to maintain the Upward Bound program in Lynn, MA. This initiative is vital not only for the individual futures of its participants but for our community as a whole.

We cannot allow this critical program to vanish. Sign this petition to urge the President of North Shore Community College and our elected representatives to advocate on behalf of Lynn’s students and fight for the restoration of Upward Bound. Together, we can make sure students continue to have access to the opportunities they deserve.
