There has been an incredibly heartbreaking video of a little boy named Tyler showcasing the physical, mental and emotional abuse that many children that are part of the LGBTQ+ community go through. This type of abuse often occurs behind closed doors and is justified by trusted family figures as wanting ‘the best for the child’. However, that is simply NOT the case. 

Research suggests that a large number of people who identify as being part of the LGBTQ+ community suffer from health disparities linked to societal stigma, discrimination, and denial of their civil and human rights (McLaughlin KA, 2010). This needs to stop NOW. 

As a progressive society, we need to show that ANY form of child abuse is wrong. We need to set an example for young children and encourage them to speak up when things like this happen. We must show our support to the LGBTQ+ community and those who have suffered years of unspoken emotional and physical abuse as a result of simply being who they are.

We must protect Tyler and other children in his situation at all costs. Tyler should be protected, loved and cared for in a LOVING home. He must also receive tremendous support to help him deal with the abuse he has endured throughout his time at home. 

This must change.
