Protect TriValley's Water: Prevent further spread of toxic PFAS

The Issue

Proposed new water supply wells in southwest Pleasanton are likely to further spread toxic PFAS in our groundwater, which makes up 20 to 50% of our drinking water supply.  Demand that Zone 7 and the City of Pleasanton stop their plans for risky new water supply wells in southwest Pleasanton.  Such drilling should not be allowed until after completion of 1) CEQA environmental review of the proposed project, and 2) peer-reviewed groundwater fate and transport modeling of PFAS.  If the results of 1 and 2 were to clearly show that pumping from new wells in southwest Pleasanton would not risk further spreading of toxic PFAS in our groundwater, then these plans could be reconsidered.

While the lead regulatory agency (San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, aka Water Board) works slowly and meticulously to identify and confirm PFAS sources in the Tri-Valley, Zone 7 is rushing to install new production wells downgradient of the known PFAS plume.  Their stated justification is to prepare for the next drought, though less risky alternatives exist.  A preferable alternative is wellhead treatment at water-supply wells that were previously shut down due to PFAS.  That alternative offers the combined benefits of providing clean drinking water, hydraulically controlling the PFAS plume and removing PFAS toxins from the Basin.

Signing this petition will help persuade our regulatory agencies and elected officials to slow down or stop Zone 7’s and the City of Pleasanton’s rush to install risky new wells, which would accelerate the spread of PFAS in our drinking water aquifer and ultimately greatly increase the cost of remediation.
