Protect transgender rights and ensure equal opportunities
The Issue
Growing up as a transgender teen in the United States, there is nothing more important to me than living in a world where I am not punished or restricted for who I am. The policies and societal norms that discriminate against transgender individuals impact not only my future but also my mental health and my inherent right to live freely.
The reality for transgender people across the country is dire. We face systemic discrimination in various aspects of life - from employment and housing to education and healthcare. These are challenges no one should have to encounter simply because of their gender identity.
One of the key areas where equality is sorely needed is in the military. Trans men, trans women, and nonbinary individuals who want to serve their country should not be denied the opportunity to do so. There is absolutely no justification for such discrimination, as proven by numerous studies and reports noting that allowing transgender people to serve openly does not impact military readiness or cohesion.
Further, transgender teenagers like myself deserve to grow up in an environment where we feel safe and supported. Access to healthcare should be a given, not a privilege that is often denied due to discrimination and biases. According to a 2021 study published in the Medical Care journal, transgender individuals are significantly less likely to receive medical care compared to their cisgender counterparts, which has detrimental effects on physical and mental health.
We are calling for federal protection and enforceable laws that ensure equal rights and opportunities for all transgender individuals. This includes safeguarding from discrimination in all sectors of life—military, employment, healthcare, and education—and ensuring that trans teens have the support they need to thrive.
We need legislation that grants us dignity, respect, and the exact same opportunities as everyone else. The Andrew R. Flores study in the American Journal of Public Health reveals shocking disparities in health outcomes among the transgender community, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive protection under the law.
Please sign this petition to urge the U.S. government to protect the rights of transgender individuals across the country, allowing us to live with freedom, dignity, and respect. Your support can help ensure a brighter future for thousands of transgender teens and adults alike.
