Protect the Vulnerable: Nebraska, Stand Up Against Animal Cruelty

The Issue

Nebraskans take pride in our values of compassion, responsibility, and community. We believe in protecting the vulnerable and standing up for what is right. Our animals are more than just property, they are companions, workers, and family members who deserve to be treated with dignity and care. When abuse goes unpunished, it violates not only our sense of justice but also the values we hold as a state. We call for stronger animal welfare laws and stricter enforcement of existing protections in Nebraska. Current penalties for acts of cruelty are not severe enough or enforced to make cases like these come to an end.

Recent Cases Highlight the Urgent Need for Reform

Leo, Omaha:

  • Leo was found cruelly bound with duct tape around his legs, his muzzle sealed shut, and then thrown into a dumpster like trash. Investigations revealed that his own owners were responsible. Yet, no charges were pressed against them. This failure to hold abusers accountable demonstrates dangerous gaps in our system of protection.

St. Paul Dog Drowning:

  • A defenseless dog in St. Paul had his legs zip tied together and was thrown over a fence into an irrigation canal, where he drowned. The person responsible received only probation, a sentence that does not reflect the severity or deliberate nature of the crime.

In both cases, justice was denied. Either by failing to bring charges at all or by handing down lenient sentences, Nebraska’s current system allows animal cruelty to go unpunished. This not only endangers animals but also puts communities at risk, as research shows a strong connection between animal abuse and violence toward people.

We Urge Nebraska Lawmakers to:

1. Strengthen penalties for intentional acts of animal cruelty, ensuring jail time rather than probation or dismissal.

2. Close loopholes that allow abusers to escape accountability.

3. Require counseling and rehabilitation programs for offenders to prevent repeat abuse.

4. Provide law enforcement with resources and training to investigate and prosecute animal cruelty cases properly.

5. Establish an animal abuser registry to prevent known offenders from owning or living with animals.

Nebraska must do better to protect those who cannot protect themselves. By strengthening our laws and enforcement, we can create a safer, more humane state for both animals and people.

We stand united in demanding justice  for every animal that has not received the justice it has deserved.
