Protect the Spirit of the Olympics: Relocate the 2028 Games from Los Angeles

Protect the Spirit of the Olympics: Relocate the 2028 Games from Los Angeles
The Issue
To: The International Olympic Committee (IOC)
Château de Vidy, 1007 Lausanne, Switzerland
We, the undersigned, respectfully urge the International Olympic Committee to reconsider its decision to host the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California, due to the city’s current state of lawlessness, violence, and moral disorder—conditions that stand in direct contradiction to the values and principles enshrined in the Olympic Charter.
The Crisis in Los Angeles
In June 2025, Los Angeles became the epicenter of violent unrest following federal immigration raids. What began as protests quickly escalated into riots marked by destruction, assaults, and targeted violence. Among the most disturbing developments:
- Explosive devices were thrown at mounted police units, with at least one detonating beneath a horse, injuring both the animal and its rider.
- Police officers and journalists have been attacked, and public infrastructure has been vandalized.
- The city has seen widespread disorder, with major highways blocked, federal buildings besieged, and emergency services overwhelmed.
Despite these events, Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom have refused federal assistance, downplayed the severity of the violence, and failed to restore order. Their inaction has allowed chaos to persist, endangering both citizens and public servants.
Violation of Olympic Values
The Olympic Charter and the IOC’s Human Rights Strategic Framework emphasize:
- Respect for human dignity
- Peaceful coexistence and non-violence
- Protection of human and animal welfare
- Safe and inclusive environments for all participants
Los Angeles, under its current leadership, has failed to uphold these principles. The city’s inability (or unwillingness) to prevent violence against animals, law enforcement, and civilians raises serious concerns about its capacity to host a global event that celebrates peace, unity, and human excellence.
Our Call to Action
We call on the IOC to:
- Launch an immediate review of Los Angeles’ compliance with the Olympic Charter and Host City Contract.
- Suspend or relocate the 2028 Olympic Games unless the city can demonstrate a clear and sustained return to order, safety, and moral leadership.
- Engage with independent human rights observers to assess the situation on the ground.
The Olympic Games are more than a sporting event, they are a symbol of global harmony. To allow them to proceed in a city currently marred by violence and disorder would be a betrayal of everything the Olympics stand for.
We urge you to act.
Sincerely,
Those with deep respect for the Olympic Movement, from its global community of believers
