Protect the Privacy and Autonomy of LGBTQ+ Students

The Issue

I, Mia Diehl, am writing this petition to express my deep concern and opposition to the policies implemented by the Marlboro, Middletown, and Manalapan-Englishtown school districts in New Jersey. These policies require educators to inform parents about a student's decision regarding their gender and sexual identity. If allowed to occur, this policy not only violates the privacy and autonomy of LGBTQ+ identifying students but also sets a dangerous precedent that could put countless students at risk across the United States.

While I do not attend any of these schools, as a teenager who has witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by LGBTQ+ individuals when coming out, I believe it is crucial that we protect their right to make personal decisions about their own identities without interference from anyone other than themselves. Coming out is an incredibly personal journey filled with fear, uncertainty, and vulnerability. It should be solely up to each individual when they feel ready to share this aspect of themselves with others.

My best friend is gay and went through immense internal turmoil before deciding to come out. He had support from friends like myself but was still afraid of how his parents would react. Despite his parents being loving and accepting individuals, he feared that discovering something life-changing about himself might alter their perception of him. This fear is not uncommon among LGBTQ+ individuals as societal pressures often create an atmosphere where coming out can be deeply terrifying.

By requiring educators to disclose a student's decision regarding gender or sexual identity without their explicit consent, these school districts are effectively forcing students into situations they may not be emotionally prepared for or comfortable with yet. This policy undermines trust between students and teachers while potentially exposing vulnerable individuals to unnecessary harm or discrimination.

It is essential that we recognize every person's right to determine when they are ready for such personal revelations in their lives. No one should have this choice taken away from them or be coerced into disclosing their identity prematurely. Respecting the autonomy and privacy of LGBTQ+ students is not only a matter of basic human rights but also crucial for their mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

Therefore, I urge the Marlboro, Middletown, and Manalapan-Englishtown school districts to reconsider and revoke these policies that infringe upon the rights of LGBTQ+ students. Let us create an environment where all students feel safe, supported, and empowered to navigate their own journey of self-discovery without unnecessary interference or pressure from external forces.

Together, we can make a difference in protecting the privacy and autonomy of LGBTQ+ identifying students across the United States. Sign this petition to stand against policies that force individuals to come out before they are ready and help foster a more inclusive educational system that respects every student's personal journey.

Thank you for your support in ensuring that no student is forced into disclosing their gender or sexual identity against their will.

Sincerely,

Mia Diehl
